The 63rd Annual Institute of the Classical Association of the Empire State (CAES) was hosted at Siena University in early October. This year’s theme was “Lingua Latina Vivit: Teaching Latin at All Levels.”

Many NYS teachers have received their Classics degrees over the years from Siena. Since June of 2024, Siena has adopted the MAT program for teacher preparation, creating links between teaching Classics and post-graduate education.

This year’s CAES institute featured author and professor James Romm as its evening keynote speaker. Dr. Romm, a NYS educator at Bard College, released his most recent book, Since You’re Mortal, in May 2026.

Classics Professor Michael Sham and Classics Lecturer Jenn Armstrong really enjoyed the conference, and worked as liaisons between the Classical Association and Siena to help host it at Siena.
